Happy Birthday Riley!

Today is Riley's 11th birthday!

Before Riley left for school this morning he asked at what time he was born. I told him around 8pm, to which he replied, "oh darn, I'm not really 11 yet". Haha, I thought that was kinda funny.

Eleven years ago today we did not have any children ... yet, but were anxiously awaiting the birth of our first child. We didn't know whether it would be a boy or a girl, although I was secretly hoping for a boy :).

At 8:02pm our beautiful baby boy was born, weighing 10lbs, 1/2oz. During labour he had had a bowel movement and inhaled a lot of it during his first big breath after he was born. Because of this he was airlifted to the closest children's hospital (3 hrs away by car) and treated for meconium aspiration for 8 days. We were so lucky and blessed to have such a great team of professionals here at our home town hospital and at the children's hospital taking care of Riley.

So today we celebrate having such a wonderful eleven year old boy in our family. We love him to pieces!!!

Halloween has come and gone, thank goodness. I know the kids love dressing up and they have fun dressing up for their school parties and going trick or treating at night, but I really don't like Halloween. I do try to put an effort and we always do the whole pumpkin thing and all that stuff. I don't know if it's the creepy decorations and costumes or all the junk food, but it just stresses me out and I don't like it. I'm glad when November first rolls around and we can start looking forward to the Christmas season, which is my favorite holiday :).

We usually wait until a day or two before Halloween to carve our pumpkins, so they don't get too smushy. Here we are digging out all the inside goo ...

Dominic didn't like the feel of the pumpkin seeds, etc so he just used a spoon to get it all out :).

This year Riley went Trick or Treating without us for the first time. My boy is growing up :( ! He was invited to go with two of his friends instead .... he was pretty excited about that. He dressed up as a hunter with a wierd mask that had a huge squished nose and big, gross teeth. It was pretty funny :).

Dominic was a brown bear ... isn't he cute?

Carson was a ninja ... and as I look at this picture, I notice how serious he is in this, hehe. He honestly was excited to go to collect some treats ... just having a serious moment, I guess :).

On another note ... people in our area are starting to get very nervous about the H1N1 flu. Last Friday was the first official Public Health vaccination clinic and by the end of the day the province was saying they were already, unexpectedly, short of vaccinations. Ugh.

Calvin had taken the boys to the clinic(I was at home babysitting, so I was planning on going to another clinic the following week) and did not even go in because of the hundreds of people waiting in line. We didn't know it at the time, but I guess they had 2 lines and if you had a child under age 5 they were allowing you and your family to go to the front of the line and get taken almost right away. So, Calvin, not realizing this, turned around and came home, thinking we'd try another day this week.

Well, by the end of the day they made that announcement and we were kicking ourselves for not sticking it out and getting the shots. Now, they will only give the H1N1 vaccine to certain people ... children under age 5 (so, fortunately, Dominic can still get it) being one of them. I'm really glad Dominic will be getting it, seeing he is under age 5 and is also a higher risk because of his heart. The rest of us will have to wait until more vaccinations are available, I guess.

It is in the area, though. I know of a couple of kids from their school who have had it, plus a boy on Riley's hockey team. With a bit of luck and lots of prayers we will hopefully all stay healthy and none of us will get this horrible flu or any other major sickness.

Happy Thanksgiving ... a couple of days late :).

Happy Belated Thanksgiving to all my fellow Canadian family and friends! We had a lovely long weekend. The kids really loved having an extra day off school. I took Riley to hockey (well, hockey school) on Friday evening and then again on Saturday afternoon. Then on Saturday evening my in-laws took us out for supper for our anniversary (which was the 12th) and then Calvin & I had tickets to go see a play at the local arts theatre. It was fun to get out and enjoy some "adult" time .. something we very rarely do.

Sunday afternoon we went to Calvin's parents' house for a nice visit with all the family and then enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving turkey supper. MmMm ... very delicious.

Dominic loves grandmere's kitty (who's name is PussPuss).

Monday morning we set out on a 2+ hour drive to the Valley with some friends. We went to a farm that had a huge corn maze, tractor rides, apple & pumpkin picking, a playground and a little farmer's market. We had never been there before, but our friends had, so they led the way. It was so much fun! The corn maze took quite a while to complete but the kids were all troopers and made it all the way through.

At one of the check points ...

When we were getting close to the end, Dominic's legs were starting to get a little tired, so big brother Riley gave him a piggy back ride :). I thought that was really cute.

After we got out of the corn maze, the kids played on the little playground for a bit. There were tunnels to climb through that were, unfortunately, filled with water from recent rainfalls, so the kids couldn't crawl through them. Instead, Riley decided to sit on one ... whatever makes you happy!

Dominic liked climbing to the top of the big hill made of tires. Sounds kind of strange to have a dirt hill with tires sticking out of it, but the kids all had fun on it!

After the tractor ride, the last stop was the pumpkin patch.

We all had a great day and were pretty tired out by the time we got home.
